Based on the Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale (NBAS), the NBO uses NBAS strength-based concepts and provides an introduction to newborn behaviour to sensitise parents to their newborn's abilities, while building collaborative relationships between health professionals and parents. The NBO is appropriate for work with families with babies from birth to 2 months old. For referral purposes, it is recommended there be an NBAS trained person available in the same hospital or community health setting.
