We have trained 160 health professionals in the UK in the NBAS, most of whom work with parents in their homes or in neighborhood baby clinics. We have also trained health professionals in hospitals and communities in Poland, Portugal and Abu Dhabi. There is interest in NBAS training in the UK becoming a universal training program for health professionals.
In 2007, The Brazelton Centre in Great Britain, a nationally registered charity, received funding from the Laura Ashley Foundation to carry out a project in Wales. The initiative is called the Brazelton Mother and Baby Project. Twenty health professionals will see 100 mothers prenatally and during the first month after birth, performing the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) at 2 weeks postnatally. Prenatal and postnatal questionnaires, the (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) and a telephone interview at 2 months will be administered to mothers to discover what features of the NBAS they found most valuable and helpful to them as parents. To meet the growing number of professionals in Wales who wish to evaluate the impacts of the NBAS, the Brazelton Centre is developing an NBAS intervention evaluation pack.
In 2008, One Plus One, a UK charity supportive of couple relationships and developers of a program called Brief Encounters, has proposed a collaborative initiative with the Brazelton Centre. Thirty-two NBAS trained health professionals will be trained in the Brief Encounters program. Health visitors will use these skills during their weekly visits with parents and their babies beginning at 2-3 weeks postnatally through 6-weeks. Impacts of the combined training will be collected using open-ended interviews with the health professionals and parents.
