2008 Brazelton Institute Training Workshops

The Brazelton Institute offers 2 types of training workshops:



The Newborn Behavioral Observations system (NBO)

There are two kinds of NBO workshops. The one-day NBO training program is especially designed for clinicians who already have experience working with newborn infants and their families. The two-day training workshop is specifically designed for early intervention professionals. See NBO system for more information about The Newborn Behavioral Observations system.

Target Audience
The NBO workshops are designed for a maximum of thirty practitioners, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, infancy specialists, lactation consultants, home visitors, occupational therapists, physical therapists, early intervention specialists, social workers and other allied health professionals. The NBO workshops are held at Children's Hospital, Boston. The Brazelton Institute also offers workshops off-site (please read section on Off-Site NBO Training Workshops).

Objectives of the NBO Training Workshop:

  1. To provide trainees with information on neurobehavioral development.
  2. To teach trainees how to administer the NBO.
  3. To teach trainees essential clinical skills in the use of the NBO system with families.

Registration
To begin the NBO system early intervention training program, please complete the NBO Registration Form (see below). The fee for the NBO workshop is $325. The fee for the One-Day NBO workshop is $425 for physicians, $325 for nurses and allied professionals, $225 for residents, fellows and professionals in training.

NBO system Training Process:
Full Day Seminar and Skill-Building Session

The NBO training is an interactive learning process. Lectures on newborn behavior and development, live baby demonstrations with families and group discussions are included in the one- and two-day sessions. On-site workshops will be conducted at Children's Hospital, Boston. The Brazelton Institute offers off-site workshops across the country*. The NBO Handbook, NBO kits, assessment tools, and reading materials will be provided and are included in the cost. Each participant will be awarded a certificate of completion.

*Off-Site NBO system Training Program
The NBO Off-Site Training Program is designed for 25-30 participants interested in having Brazelton Institute Faculty members travel to their work setting. The requirements for off-site training are as follows:

  1. There must be 25-30 participants.
  2. The cost of the one-day training is $10,000, including all training materials. (A two-day off-site training is available for $20,000.)
  3. The group hosting the training must pay for the travel expenses (including airfare, transportation, and hotel accommodations) of The Brazelton Institute Faculty.
  4. The group of participants must have access to newborn infants.

The Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS)

The NBAS is a comprehensive examination of neonatal behavior appropriate to use for infants from birth to two months of age. The NBAS has been used as a reliable research tool around the world to identify individual differences in newborn behavior (Brazelton, 1973, 1985; Brazelton and Nugent, 1995). The NBAS training program is especially designed for researchers, but also appropriate for clinicians and pediatric professionals in training, who would like a thorough foundation in infant development and behavior. COST:

Training at Children's Hospital, Boston:

$1200 per trainee. Price includes all training materials (manual, assessment kit, handbook, and instructional video), pre-training phase, skill test, long-distance one-on-one, and a reliability session at Children's Hospital, Boston.

Off-site Training:

The Brazelton Institute offers NBAS training off-site. The cost is $1200 per trainee, which includes the cost of materials. A minimum of two trainees is required. Travel expenses and accomodations must be provided for the Brazelton Institute Trainer, plus a $500 trainee fee.
