My first experience with NBO...
I had heard all the rave and talk about NBO...and then I saw.
The way the baby's head turned as the RN moved the red ball from
one side to the other. The manner in which the mother's face lit up
when the baby's head turned towards the sound of a rattle. The
noticeable response by the infant at the sound of her mother's
voice and the amazement displayed by the mother that her baby
was so engaged, providing her an insight on her baby's ability to
communicate. The nurse also demonstrated the innate walking and
crawling reflex, while expressing amazement to the mother at the
newborn's abilities at such a young age. As I watched the RN
performing these exercises with the infant, I noticed the mother's
face become more engaged and curious with every subsequent
technique. Over the course of our time together, I noticed the
mother's demeanor become more relaxed and interested.
Following the NBO techniques, the mother quickly picked up her
infant and started kissing, talking and cooing to her, all the while
the other mothers in the facility congratulated her on how smart
and communicative her baby behaved. As we left, mom held her
baby with outward expressions of love and happiness.
Following my first experience with the administration of the NBO,
I was able to appreciate firsthand the impact that it had and how it
allowed for that instant bonding between mother and baby.
